Chargepod gets an upgrade

Chargepod gets an upgrade: ”

chargepod

This isn’t the first Chargepod to be released. The last one covered 6 cellphones at a time, and it’s around $40 a gadget. Now this new Chargepod will charge even bigger gadgets and at an even larger price. Sure it’ll make it possible to carry less chargers when you’re traveling, which is ideal with a big family of gadget lovers. However, it’s a convenience that’ll cost you.

This one will give your cellphone, laptop, camera and other devices the power that they crave. All of those devices plug into the Chargepod and the Chargepod itself only takes up one of your outlets. You’ll need different cable tips to accommodate your different devices and each one will probably cost you about $10 a piece. Then for the device itself it’ll cost you about $200. It’s not exactly a bargain, but if you’re in desperate need of something like this then at least your gadgets will stay up and running after you fork out the cash.

In praise of the iPad: A contrarian view

In praise of the iPad: A contrarian view: ”

If there has been an editorial theme about the iPad over the last few days, it’s been this: it disappoints. Pundits and consumers alike have been underwhelmed by the name (I mean, seriously, does anyone in the product naming department use feminine hygiene products? How many of these devices are going to be named ‘Max’?), by the physical design (Can you say ‘Un-Ives-like Bezel’ three times fast?), by the missing features (no camera, no multitasking, still no Flash), and so forth. And yet, despite these seeming flaws, I’m wildly enthusiastic about the tablet. I think part of that enthusiasm is attributable to the fact that I’m a dyed-in-the-wool netbook user… and we are the actual target audience for the device.

Steve Jobs laid out the raison d’etre for the tablet right at the start of his presentation. Apple was going after the part of the market that wanted light computing: more than a phone could deliver and less involved than a laptop demanded. Ergo, the netbook. The list of things in the middle column of his main slide reflected the exact way that netbook users operate: checking the mail, surfing the web, enjoying some media. That’s exactly how my parents use their netbook, how my friends do, how I do. We’re coffee-shop, hotel, and passenger-seat netbook users. To that, you can add city commuters and airline passengers among those who have driven the netbook craze.

Netbooks are great. They are small, they are insanely cheap, and they offer just enough functionality to get a few things done without jumping into serious work that would demand a full-sized screen and keyboard. I know approximately three badzillion netbook users, and with very few exceptions, they are all Windows users.

LOS ANGELES, CA - FEBRUARY 10: Rapper T-Pain ...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

T-Pain has a new song called “I’M SEEING BRAKELIGHTS”. Hot track but his opening verse seems to say that his seeing breaklights from him/he/his friend????

Now rapper Maino predicted in his “2010 PREDICTIONS” track that this year a major rapper was going to admit he was gay. WOW!!

Take a listen when you get a chance.

Haiti! Man that is a new level of hurt!

Haiti! Man that is a new level of hurt!

Watching the pictures and videos come in was a whole new level disaster. When I saw the Katrina disaster unfold I was just pissed that the Government was taking so long to react. But even then it was just a normal disaster that happens based on where people choose to live. I lived through 4 hurricanes in one year in Florida before I decided enough was enough and moved to Georgia.

This is different, there has not been an Earthquake in Haiti for so long that people were caught completely unprepared. For some reason this disaster resonates with me enough that I overcame my cynicism and doubt as to whether the money would actually get there and donated anyway. To improve the odds that the money will get to Haiti I chose two charities. Personally, I think this is one where it will take help from everywhere to even make a dent in those peoples lives. Just my thoughts…

NPR’s iPhone app helps doctor recommend treatment for stroke patient

NPR's iPhone app helps doctor recommend treatment for stroke patient: ”

I have been a huge fan of NPR’s News app [iTunes link] since it was initially released in August, and so seeing the following item was especially heartwarming. Right before Christmas, NPR published a story on how a Los Angeles doctor utilized the NPR app to obtain the information needed to get the right stroke treatment drug for his sister.

Tanya Gill, a Chicago art instructor, collapsed while shopping, and word went out to her family members that she had been rushed to the hospital. Her brother, Dr. Joe Hastings, told his wife about his sister’s illness, who commented that it sounded like a story she heard about stroke treatment on NPR. Hastings accessed the story on the NPR app and e-mailed it to the rest of the family. He then contacted the doctors treating Gill and urged them to utilize the drug, tPA, mentioned in the story.

Gill has since made a complete recovery. While tPA is not a ‘miracle drug’ for stroke (it can only be used on a subset of patients, in a very narrow time window, and carries with it a substantial risk of severe bleeding), in this case it may have made a big difference.

How has ‘the internet in your pocket’ changed how you interact with family members and health professionals when it comes to medical issues? Let us know in the comments.
